I am a psychology professor with a long history of depression and other disorders. After decades of struggling and several periods of extreme despair that nearly cost me everything, I have finally started getting substantial relief from my illness, with monthly ketamine infusions.
I often see students suffering from mental illness and think it might help them to have an ‘experienced’ person (for lack of a better term) as a faculty mentor and advocate; I also really believe that for those of us with mental illness, public silence is a serious problem. Nevertheless, because openly sharing what I’ve learned about living with mental illness could realistically hurt my career, much of it has to go unsaid, except in this anonymous blog.
